Albay (Mayon Volcano)

Home of the world's most perfect volcano cone — rice plains, ruins and hot springs beneath Mayon.

About Albay (Mayon Volcano)

An almost perfect cone

Albay is the province that Mayon Volcano built. Rising 2,462 meters in near-perfect symmetry over Legazpi City and the Bicol plains, Mayon is the most active volcano in the Philippines and one of the most beautiful cones on Earth. The province around it offers the Cagsawa Ruins, viewpoints, volcanic hot springs, whale shark season in nearby Donsol, and a fiery Bicolano food culture built on chili, coconut cream and pili nuts.

The bell tower of a church buried by Mayon's catastrophic 1814 eruption stands alone in the fields — the province's signature photo spot, with the perfect cone framed directly behind it.

A short hike or drive up Legazpi's lookout hill rewards you with the city, the airport runway that cuts between the cone, and Mayon filling the horizon — best at sunrise.
