Sagada and Banaue Itinerary: 4 Days in the Cordilleras

Sagada destination guide

Four days through the Cordilleras: the Banaue and Batad terraces, Sagada's caves and hanging coffins, and the route that ties it together.

The route at a glance

The classic four days run Manila or Baguio to Banaue, on to Batad, then across to Sagada, and back down by night bus. Overnight buses from Manila make the long road distances manageable, and most travelers reverse the loop in whichever direction the bus schedules favor.

Days 1–2: Banaue and Batad

Arrive in Banaue, see the village viewpoints, then push on to Batad, where the rice terraces form a near-perfect amphitheater. Hike down into the terraces to Tappiya Falls and stay a night in Batad itself — the early morning light over the terraces is the payoff for the steep walk in.

Days 3–4: Sagada

Travel on to Sagada for its own brand of mountain culture: the hanging coffins and Echo Valley, the limestone chambers of Sumaguing Cave with a local guide, and the Kiltepan viewpoint for a sunrise sea of clouds when the weather cooperates. Leave the afternoon of day four for the return bus.

Practical notes

Nights are cold at altitude even in summer, so pack layers. ATMs are scarce between Banaue and Sagada, guides are arranged locally and are required for cave and terrace treks, and roads are mountain roads — build buffer time around any onward connection.

Common questions

How do you get to Sagada from Manila?▾

Overnight buses run from Manila to Baguio or directly toward Sagada, with connections onward by van or bus through Bontoc. The full journey takes most of a night and a day, so plan arrivals for the following afternoon.

Is the Sagada and Banaue route doable in four days?▾

Yes, but it is brisk: two nights around Banaue and Batad and one to two in Sagada. Add a day each way if you prefer unhurried hikes or want to include Maligcong's terraces near Bontoc.

Do you need a guide in Batad and Sagada?▾

Yes for the treks: Batad's terrace trails and Sagada's caves are explored with registered local guides, arranged at the tourism offices in each town. Fees are modest and the routes are genuinely easy to lose without one.
