The rice terraces of Banaue carved into the Cordillera mountains

Banaue Rice Terraces: Viewpoints, Batad and What to Do

Banaue destination guide

Banaue's viewpoints, the amphitheater of Batad and the quieter Hapao terraces — what each offers and how to plan your days among them.

The Banaue viewpoints

Just above the town, a string of roadside viewpoints looks over the terraces carved into the valley walls. They are the quickest taste of the landscape — an hour or two with a tricycle and your camera — and the best place to orient yourself before committing to longer hikes.

Batad: the amphitheater

Batad's terraces curve in a full amphitheater and are the region's most dramatic sight. Reaching them means a steep hike in from the saddle, followed by a trail down through the terraces to Tappiya Falls; most visitors stay overnight in the village to catch the terraces in morning light.

Hapao and the quieter terraces

For fewer people, the Hapao terraces near Hungduan offer a gentler, spring-fed landscape, and the Mayoyao terraces sit further out for dedicated travelers. These are the right choice if you want the same engineering marvel with more silence than spectacle.

Planning your visit

Terrace treks require registered local guides, arranged at Banaue's tourism desk, and the cooler months bring the clearest views. Carry cash, pack for cold nights, and check trail conditions after heavy rain, since landslides occasionally close routes in the wet season.

Common questions

Banaue or Batad — which should you visit?▾

Both, ideally: Banaue is the gateway town with viewpoints and transport, while Batad is the full amphitheater experience an overnight stay away. If you only have one day, take in Banaue's viewpoints; with two or more, overnight in Batad.

How do you get to Banaue?▾

Overnight buses run from Manila toward Banaue via Nueva Vizcaya, taking most of a night. From Banaue, jeepneys and tricycles connect the viewpoints, Batad's saddle and neighboring villages.

How many days do you need in Banaue?▾

Two days cover the viewpoints and a Batad overnight comfortably; three allow Hapao or Mayoyao as well. Treks are day-scale, so extra days buy quieter terraces rather than longer ones.
